Installing seven Bush Pumps and one Solar Pump for schools, villages and one clinic in Matabeleland.
With this project, financed by the AFAS Foundation, Mpilo Foundation aims to install eight pumps near schools and villages in Matabeleland. This includes Maraposa, Semukheleni, Zamanyoni, Boomerange Ekukhanyeni (also for its clinic), Mgadla (two sites) and Mbuso.
Finding a suitable site for a borehole and installation of a pump proved most difficult at Maraposa and Ekukhanyeni Clinic. When at Maraposa the normal hand operated Bush Pump turned out to require several people to use, the solution was to install a more expensive solar pump. Fortunately, this pump yielded more than 800 liters of water. At Ekukhanyeni, it took three surveys to find a good site for drilling. Luckily, a borehole off the clinic grounds was found to produce 2500 liters of water at a depth of only 40 meters.
At all of the other schools and villages, working pumps have been installed, providing over 16,000 people with clean water.
